Shelina Permalloo’s story is as vibrant as the dishes she creates. Born to British Mauritian parents who migrated from Mauritius to Southampton in the 1970s, Shelina’s culinary journey is deeply rooted in her heritage. From her early career as a project manager in equality, diversity, and inclusion to winning the prestigious title of BBC’s MasterChef Champion in 2012, Shelina has carved a remarkable path in the culinary world.
Her debut cookbook, ‘Sunshine on a Plate,’ is a celebration of Mauritian flavours and traditions, earning her the esteemed Gourmand Book Award for ‘Best African Cookbook.’ Shelina’s restaurant, Lakaz Maman, embodies the spirit of modern Mauritian street food, offering a tantalising array of dishes inspired by her upbringing. Lakaz Maman has one TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2021 and 2022 ranking it top 10% of restaurants in the world.
Most recently she has partnered her restaurant with SOS Children’s Village, an orphanage based in Mauritius. For every full-time staff member, Lakaz Maman will sponsor a child to directly impact and benefit vulnerable children in Mauritius. Her community work in Southampton is extensive. During the pandemic, Shelina and her team cooked over 1,500 meals for key workers, homeless, and children, as well as supporting over 300 free school meals.
